DAY OF THE DEAD & THE SUGAR SKULL
Every year on November 1st and 2nd, Mexico honours the departed. These two days are a celebration; a time devoted entirely to the loved ones who have left this world. Food is a central part in this celebration (of course!) but Mexicans also prepare for these two days by decorating burial sites with altars. On these alters, they present the skull that you’re seeing above (and that you’ll see all around this restaurant).
Known as Sugar Skulls, these bright and colourful pieces of art are in contrast to the darkness that typically surrounds death. They are a commemoration of the lives that lived and it is believed that the departed return home to enjoy the offering.
It’s a symbol of all that we have, and to what matters to us most – love.
